Colorado Springs, Colo. – San Diego State's Yanni Wetzell has been named the Mountain West Men's Basketball Peak Player of the Week for his contribution on the hardwood in games played Jan. 7-11. The announcement was made from the conference office on Monday.
The graduate transfer led SDSU to a pair of wins last week; 72-52 at Wyoming and 83-65 against Boise State. The victories improve the No. 7 Aztecs to 17-0 on the season, 6-0 in Mountain West action. San Diego State remains one of two programs in the nation to have not suffered a loss this season, Auburn is the other.
Wetzell averaged 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals in 28.5 minutes per game. He hit 16-of-19 (.842) attempts from the field and 5-of-6 (.833) attempts from the charity stripe in two games.
Against Boise State, the 6-10 forward scored 20 points equaling his major college career high. He made 9-of-12 shots tying his career-best for field goals in a game and matched his career-high with four assists. He became the fourth Aztec since the 1996-97 season to record at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while shooting 75-plus percent from the field in a game.
At Wyoming, Wetzell was 7-of-7 from the field and did not take a shot outside the lane. He finished with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists and is the fourth San Diego State player in the Brian Dutcher/Steve Fisher era to make at least seven field goals without a miss in the game.
This is the second Mountain West weekly honor for Wetzell in 2019-20.
