SAN DIEGO – In conjunction with the start of the 2019 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, tournament host the University of Hawai'i revealed that San Diego State will be among the teams competing in next year's edition of the event.
The 12th annual tournament will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu on Dec. 22, 23 and 25, 2020, and features San Diego State, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Saint Mary's, Temple, Seattle University, Western Michigan and Hawai'i.
The eight-teams will compete in 12 games over three days. Each team will play one game per day, advancing through the bracket. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout the event will face off in the championship game on Christmas Day, the final day of the tournament.
The 2020 edition marks the third time the Aztecs will have competed in the Diamond Head Classic, having gone 5-1 in its previous two times in the event. In 2012, San Diego State's first time competing in the tournament, the team went 2-1 falling to No. 3 Arizona 68-67 in the championship game. SDSU swept its three games and won the title in 2016 with a 62-48 victory over San Francisco in the championship match-up.
In addition to the Aztecs' championship in 2016, other previous tournament champions of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic include USC (2009, 2017), Butler (2010), Kansas State (2011), Arizona (2012), Iowa State (2013), George Washington (2014), Oklahoma (2015), and TCU (2018).
