BERKELEY, Calif. – The Aztec men's soccer team shut out Cal 1-0 at Edwards Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears, who were celebrating their senior night, out shot SDSU 27-9, but freshman goalkeeper Tetsuya Kadono saved eight shots while collecting his first collegiate shutout.
"It has been a very difficult season," head coach Lev Kirshner said after the match. "This group just keeps going and keeps believing in each other. I am so proud of the boys and how they grinded out this win."
Adam Vargas converted a PK in the 51st minute to provide the scoring for the Aztecs. It was the second straight game Vargas scored on a PK.
SDSU was outshot 17-4 in the second frame and Cal had six second half corners to the Aztecs' one, but it was SDSU who found the back of the net for the decisive goal to avenge a 4-0 loss from October.
Kadono, making his fourth career start, notched a career-best eight saves while blanking Cal.
