SAN DIEGO – San Diego State's swimming and diving team finished day one of the Mizzou Invite Wednesday. The Aztecs currently are in third place after six scored events with a total of 213 points.
The day started strong with senior Courtney Vincent hitting the water in the 100 fly preliminary heats, where she bested her school record in the event with a swim of 52.00. She was not only the preliminary heats' top finisher but finished almost two seconds faster than all other competitors. In the finals, Vincent shaved .14 seconds off her preliminary heat time to better her school record set earlier in the day and bring home first place for the Aztecs.
In the 200 IM, sophomore Kristina Murphy swam a personal-best time of 2:01.13 to earn a spot in the A finals and improve her hold on the eighth-fastest time in program history. Senior McKenna Meyer finished just one spot behind her with a time of 2:01.32, sending both to the A final. The finals saw Meyer top Murphy, who finished with a time of 2:01.07 while Murphy tapped the wall at 2:01.19. The duo placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
The 50 free was no different as sophomore Lizzie Menzmer touched the wall with a time of 22.80 in the preliminary heats, her career-best effort and the ninth-best time in the SDSU records. Menzmer finished just .01 slower in the final heats to secure a seventh-place finish.
Freshman Milena Karpisz went the distance in the 500 free, topping her previous-best swim by almost nine seconds with a time of 4:52.44 in the event's preliminary heats. She then cut almost six seconds off her preliminary time in the finals swimming to a time of 4:46.68 to nab third place and mark the fourth-best time in SDSU laurels.
The Aztecs' relay teams also impressed Wednesday, as the quartet of senior Alma Thormalm, junior Klara Thormalm, senior Peyton Wilson and Menzmer earned a bronze finish with a time of 1:13.16. The effort marked the tenth-best time in program history. The 400 medley relay of freshman Evonne Stehr, senior Morganne McKennan, Vincent, and Menzer followed suit, collecting a third-place finish with a time of 3:39.89.
Competition continues tomorrow with preliminary heats at 10 A.M. CT. Final heats are scheduled for 6 P.M. CT.
