SAN DIEGO – Head coach Stacie Terry and her staff announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent. Asia Avinger, Kimberly Villalobos and Flera "Flo" Vinerte will join the Aztecs for the 2020-21 season.
"We are thrilled with the trio of young ladies we are adding to the program," Head coach Stacie Terry said. "All three of these girls know how to win and will be helping their high schools compete for championships this season. They received many offers and could've gone elsewhere but found a fit with how we play and with the San Diego State culture.
Asia Avinger | 5'7" | Point Guard | Rosary HS | Cerritos, Calif.
Coach Terry's take: "She is a dynamic pass-first point guard who is quick off the dribble and tenacious on defense."
Why Avinger chose SDSU: "I knew in my heart that this is the place I wanted to be. I want to be part of creating something special and I see great success for the program in the future. I knew I would have a great education by choosing San Diego State, but I also have never met a coaching staff so genuine and hardworking as the ones at SDSU."
Avinger is a four-star recruit and received a scout's grade of 95 by ESPN. She is ranked No. 68 in the country and No. 19 for her position according to ESPN. She had over 20 DI offers.
Last season she led Rosary High School to a 27-8 record while capturing the CIF State Division One championship. She scored 24 points in the championship game and averaged 12.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists on the year.
An athletic lead guard who can score inside and out, Avinger has made the All-CIF Southern Section team each of the last two years. Last season, she was named to the Max Preps All-California Third team, the Los Angeles Times All-Area Team, the Orange County Register All-County First Team.
As a sophomore, she helped Los Alamitos High School win the Sunset League and advance to the CIF Division I semifinals. After the season, she was named her league's MVP and to the All-CIF Southern Section team.
Kimberly Villalobos | 6'0" | Guard/Forward | Chaminade HS | Van Nuys, Calif.
Coach Terry's take: "She is a versatile guard who can do a little of everything. She can pass, lock down on defense and will bring athleticism to the team."
Why Villalobos chose SDSU: "The first time I visited SDSU, I knew I was heading home but it never felt like I was leaving home."
Villalobos, who received over 10 DI offers, averaged 19 points per game last season at Bishop Alemany High School.
She has played with the El Salvador national team and was recently named the top Salvadoran basketball player in the US.
Villalobos plays for Team Taurasi for the California Storm AAU Team on the prestigious Nike circuit with Asia Avinger.
Flera "Flo" Vinerte | 6'2" | Forward | New Hope Academy | Riga, Latvia
Coach Terry's take: "Flo can score inside & out, is a great passer and has a great feel for the game."
Why Vinerte chose SDSU: "I used to write "California Dreamin'" on my shoes so when an opportunity arose to join San Diego State, I didn't have to think twice about it, because I had the chance to go somewhere I've always wanted to go to."
Vinerte, a native of Riga, Latvia, is a skilled post with great passing skills. She helped the New York Military Academy win a Class E State Championship last season before transferring to the New Hope Academy (Landover Hills, Md.), who won last year's national championship, for her senior year.
Vinerte, who has a nice shooting touch from outside, played for Latvia in the U-17 FIBA World Championships.
