SAN DIEGO – The Aztec rowing team competed in the San Diego Fall Classic Sunday morning on Mission Bay in their final competition of the fall season. Their day was highlighted by a first place finish in the open four competition. The Aztecs also placed second and third in the open eight race.
"We were happy with how the team raced today, highlighted by the four winning," head coach Bill Zack said. "We have a lot of talented women on the team and the intrasquad competition is great to see. Now we'll do some physiological testing, have our Thanksgiving triathlon, and gear up for final exams."
Racing in calm conditions against USD, UCSD and Orange Coast College, SDSU began the day with an impressive showing in the open eight race, placing three boats in the top five. The Aztecs placed second (A, 16:15.9), third (B, 16:37.3) and fifth (C, 17:04.2). USD' A boat had the fastest time, clocking in at 16:05.5.
In the Open Novice competition, the Aztecs placed fifth with a time of 21:22.3, coming in behind USC (18:32.6), ASU (19:45.3), USD (19:58.7) and Long Beach State (21:14.7).
The Aztecs closed out the day with a first place finish in the open four. Their A boat finished with a time of 18:47.4, 24 seconds ahead of the second place finisher USC.
