SAN DIEGO -- Former Aztecs continue to produce all around the world of sports.
Kawhi Leonard made his regular season debut for the Los Angeles Clippers Tuesday night, going for 30 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 112-102 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Leonard was 10-for-19 from the field (including seven straight makes at one point) and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. In the process, Leonard passed fellow Aztec Hall of Famer Michael Cage for the most points scored by an SDSU player in NBA history. Rookie power forward Jalen McDaniels has made the final roster for the Charlotte Hornets, who start their season out Wednesday night against the Chicago Bulls.
Stephen Strasburg will start Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday night in Houston, taking on the Houston Astros. Washington won the series opener, 5-4, on Tuesday night.
Former Aztec Damontae Kazee was flying all over the field for the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday against the Rams. Kazee made eight tackles, six of which were solo and two for loss. Kazee turned it up a notch in important situations, as five of his tackles occurred in the red zone. He was in on 56 defensive snaps in addition to a special teams snap. Atlanta hosts Rashaad Penny and the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
Kazee wasn't the only former Aztec playing in Week 7. Daniel Brunskill drew another start for the San Francisco 49ers as they remained unbeaten at 6-0. Brunskill played all 64 offensive snaps and four special teams plays on a wet and muddy field in Washington in a 9-0 win. The 49ers play Carolina Panthers in Week 8.
Cardinals long snapper Aaron Brewer appeared 11 snaps on special teams as the Arizona Cardinals won their third straight game, beating the New York Giants, 27-21. Arizona plays Sunday at New Orleans. Nick Bawden played on seven snaps on offense and 17 on special teams for the Detroit Lions against the Vikings in Week 7 in a 42-30 loss before hosting the Giants on Sunday. After missing Seattle's Week 6 game with a hamstring injury, Rashaad Penny got in a full week of practice, but only saw two snaps of action without receiving any touches in a 30-16 loss to Baltimore. Kameron Kelly and the Pittsburgh Steelers were on bye in Week 7 (they play Miami on Monday Night), while Calvin Munson (practice squad for New England) and Kahale Warring (injured reserve for Houston) will look to see action shortly.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles Galaxy, featuring former SDSU players Joe Corona and Daniel Steres, won their playoff game against Minnesota United FC by the score of 2-1. Corona did not see the field, but Steres played all 90 minutes, finishing with a tackle attempted, three clearances and a sustained foul. The Galaxy advance to play Los Angeles FC and fellow former Aztec Steven Beitashour on Thursday night
Former Aztecs Xander Schauffele and Scott Piercy will take part in the ZOZO Championship in Chiba, Japan this weekend as they continue the early part of the 2019-20 PGA tour.
