SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis co-hosts the ITA Southwest Regionals alongside the University of San Diego Thursday, Oct. 17, through Monday, Oct. 21 at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma. Action begins each day with doubles play at 9 a.m. and is immediately followed by singles draw competition.
A total of 16 teams are set to participate in this year's regional, including hosts SDSU and USD, Pepperdine, Hawai'i, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Grand Canyon, University of Arizona, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, USC, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, Arizona State, UCLA and Loyola Marymount.
All four of SDSU's doubles teams received byes in Thursday's round of 64 and first see action Friday in the round of 32. Kicking off doubles play for the Aztecs is the All-Mountain West doubles team of sophomore Alicia Melosch and junior Nnena Nadozie, scheduled to play the winner of Thursday's Arizona State-Grand Canyon University matchup. Freshman Cécile Morin and sophomore Agustina Rimoldi Godoy compete against the UCSB duo of Lise Sentenac and Juliana Valero, who also received a first-round bye, while freshman Julia Jordan and junior transfer Tamara Arnold begin doubles play when they take on the winner of Thursday's UCLA-LMU contest. Lastly, the tandem of junior Abbie Mulbarger and senior Mia Smith are set to take on LMU's Lillian Gabrielsen and V Miroshnichenko.
In singles play, Arnold and Mulbarger use their byes from the doubles round of 64 to get an early start in the singles round of 128 at 9 a.m., with Arnold taking on Arizona's Talya Zandberg while Mulbarger duels UCLA's Taylor Johnson. At 9:45 a.m, Melosch and Jordan begin competition, taking on GCU's Celina Buhr and Ludoucia Infantino, respectively. The final Aztecs hit the court at 10 a.m., as Nadozie, Rimoldi Godoy and Morin open singles play. Nadozie first sees LMU's Yesica De Lucas, while Rimoldi Godoy takes on UC Riverside's Tia Elpusan and Morin clashes with UC Santa Barbara's Lise Sentenac.
Results and updated brackets from the Southwest Regionals will also be available on GoAztecs.com following each day of play. Parking and admission at Barnes Tennis Center are free for spectators.
SDSU enters the Southwest Regionals most recently competing at the Fall Classic I Sept. 27-29, where the Aztecs saw both GCU and CSUN- whom they will face again this weekend—as well as UTEP, San José State, Utah, and McNeese State. The Aztecs claimed five championship victories in the final day of play, led by Nadozie and Melosch's red draw doubles title and first-place finishes in the singles red, black, silver, and gold draws by Arnold, Nadozie, Rimoldi Godoy, and Morin.
