SCENE SETTER (through games of Saturday, Oct. 12)
* The two teams that rank first and second among all 130 FBS schools in turnover margin meet in the Mountain West West Division opener for both teams Saturday afternoon when San Diego State (5-1, 2-1 MW) travels to San José State (3-3, 1-2 MW).
* San Diego State, owners of a 29-1 record the last 30 times it has a turnover margin advantage, is tied for second nationally in turnover margin at +1.67 (13 gained, 3 lost). San José State, meanwhile, leads the nation with a +2.00 turnover margin (18 gained, 6 lost).
* San Diego State has not committed a turnover since the second quarter of the Sept. 21 game against Utah State. That means the Aztecs have played 10 straight quarters of turnover-free ball, a streak that covers 195 offensive snaps from scrimmage.
* The Aztecs and Spartans are meeting for the 43rd time with San Diego State owning a 24-19-2 series advantage. SDSU has won the last six meetings (all of those occurred after San José State joined the Mountain West).
* SDSU is 5-1 after six games marking the fourth straight season that the Aztecs have won at least five of their first six games. San Diego State is one of just five teams nationally to do that (also: Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and Ohio State).
* San Diego State received points in both the Associated Press and the USA Today coaches poll. The Aztecs received two points and are 37th in the AP poll and are 32nd with 18 points in the coaches poll.
* The Aztecs are one of 30 teams in the nation that enter the week with one loss or fewer (12 unbeaten teams, 18 one-loss teams).
* There are 21 teams in the nation yet to lose a road game this season. Only two teams (San Diego State and SMU) are unbeaten in 2019 road games and have played at least three road games.
* The Aztecs' three-game road streak is tied for the ninth-longest FBS streak nationally.
* SDSU is looking to win its fourth straight road game to open the season. The Aztecs have done that only once in the last 44 years ('17).
* Last Saturday, San Diego State overcame a 14-3 deficit en route to a 26-22 victory over a Wyoming team that entered the game with a 4-1 record. The Aztec defense limited the Cowboys to 266 total yards, including 92 yards after intermission. The SDSU offense got a pair of touchdown passes and produced 209 yards through the air. In the second half, the Aztec offense produced touchdown drives of 69, 63 and 76 yards.
* San Diego State's defense ranks among the national leaders in nearly every statistical category. Among its highest rankings are: 4th in rushing defense (64.0), 4th in rushing yards allowed per carry (2.3), T-7th in total touchdowns allowed (9), 8th in first downs allowed (85), T-8th in scoring defense (13.2), 9th in total defense (270.0), 9th in tackles for loss (8.4), T-9th in passing touchdowns allowed (4), T-12th in turnovers forced (13), T-14th in rushing touchdowns allowed (4), 21st in passing yards per attempt (6.15), 21st in passing efficiency rating (113.4) and T-21st in interceptions (7).
* The Aztecs have allowed 79 points through six games. That is the lowest total for an SDSU team through the first six games since 1976 and the last time SDSU allowed fewer points in any six-game stretch since games six through 11 of the 2016 season.
