SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team will have four players compete this weekend at the UCSB Fall Classic, Oct. 11-13, in Santa Barbara, California.
Aztec seniors David Hough (Traralgon, Australia) and Rafael Gonzalez Almazan (Madrid, Spain) will join juniors Aaro Pollanen (Helsinki, Finland) and Ignacio Martinez (Weston, Fla.) for the drive up the coast to the campus of UC Santa Barbara.
Along with the host Gauchos and SDSU, the tournament will feature players from such schools as California, UCLA, Oregon, Fresno State, Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount and Stanford.
Hough scored two impressive victories in the main draw of his singles flight last week at the Aztec Fall Invitational, where he defeated Mateusz Smolicki of UC Irvine (1-6, 7-6(4), 6-3) and Connor Rapp of UCLA (7-5, 6-3), before falling short in the third-place match.
Gonzalez Almazan and Pollanen were eliminated from the pre-qualifying round of the ITA All-American Championships last Saturday, while rain forced the cancellation of their consolation matches on Sunday.
Hough and Pollanen also appeared at the season-opening Silverado Invitational last month in Napa, California, with the latter posting a singles victory in his SDSU debut over Lucas Labrunie of Hawai'i, 7-6, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Martinez will be seeing his first action of the fall after logging a 14-15 overall singles record during the 2018-19 campaign, including an 11-10 mark in dual-match competition. He also garnered all-Mountain West accolades in doubles last year pairing with the since-graduated Sander Gjoels-Andersen.
Following this weekend's event, San Diego State jumps quickly back into tournament play when it participates in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, Oct. 17-20, in Malibu, California.
