BREMERTON, Wash. – The San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in sixth place at the Husky Invitational after shooting a combined 3-under-par 573 on Monday during the first two rounds at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
Playing in their 2019 fall opener, the Aztecs posted cards of 284-289 to finish the day one shot behind fifth-place Oregon (-4) heading into Tuesday final round on the par-72, 7,169-yard Olympic Course.
Host Washington (-22) sits atop the team standings after vaulting past first-round leader Long Beach State (-13) thanks to an 8-under 280 during the afternoon session, while Nevada (-9) landed in the third spot, followed by Oregon State (-7).
Through 36 holes, Puwit Anapansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) is SDSU's top individual after firing a collective 2-under 142 on consecutive 71s. The Aztec junior sank seven birdies overall, including four in the second round, where he offset a trio of bogeys. Among his conversions were successful drains on his back nine on the par-5 No. 6 and the par-3 eighth following a bogey at No. 4.
With his total, Anupansuebsai remains five shots off the pace, where Long Beach State's Owen Avrit (-6) is among a four-player logjam atop the leaderboard with Oregon State's Spencer Tibbits and the Washington duo of Noah Woolsey and Jan Schneider at 6-under.
Meanwhile, Christian Banke (Danville, Calif.) sits two shots behind of teammate Anupansuebsai in a tie for 19th at even-par 144 after completing rounds of 73-71. The SDSU junior registered a team-best 26 pars overall and carded five birdies, including an impressive drain on the par-4, 462-yard No. 7, which ranked as the second-most difficult hole of the day.
Elsewhere, Zihao Jin (Beijing, China) moving into a tie for 24th at 1-over 145 after logging a 75 and a 70. The Aztec junior recorded two birdies in each round, but the morning conversions were unable to ease the sting of five bogeys. However, the Rancho Bernardo alumnus countered two additional bogeys in the afternoon with an eagle at the par-5, 515-yard No. 14, which catapulted him 31 places up in the standings.
Leo Oyo (Tokyo, Japan) was not as fortunate, tumbling 27 spots into a tie for 32nd at 2-over 146. The SDSU sophomore posted the team's low round of the day with a 69 during the first 18 holes, sinking five birdies against two bogeys, including successful makes on his first two greens at the par-4 No. 10 and the par-5 11th. Oyo came back with five more birdies in the afternoon but was saddled with a 77 after suffering a rash of six bogeys and two double bogeys, which hastened his fall.
Rounding out the Aztec starting five was Callum Bruce (Banff, Scotland), who finished the day in a tie for 50th at 5-over 149 on rounds of 71-78. The junior transfer from Midland College (Texas) was cruising in the morning session, draining six birdies against two bogeys, including three straight on his back nine at holes 6-8 to get to 4-under for the round. However, a triple-bogey on his finishing hole at the par-5 ninth abruptly sapped his momentum and served as a harbinger of further trouble in the second round. Bruce was unable to generate any consistency in the afternoon, carding just one birdie on the par-4 17th, but a plague of seven bogeys proved too much to overcome.
SDSU also have four golfers competing as individuals this week at the concurrent Olympic College Invitational at McCormick Woods Golf Club in Port Orchard, Washington.
Through 36 holes, senior Ambrose Abbraciamento (Newtown Pa.) is tied for third out of 54 players at even-par 144, while fellow classmate Newport Laparojkit (Montebello, Calif.) sits in a tie for fifth at 2-over 146, followed by junior Steve Sugimoto (San Diego, Calif.), who finished the day in 14th at 8-over 152, and freshman Simone Armando Colozza (Rome, Italy), who landed in the 19th spot at 11-over 155.
The Husky Invitational concludes on Tuesday when San Diego State tees off alongside Oregon and Oregon for the final round, starting at 8:10 a.m. PT on hole 1.
