SAN DIEGO – The Aztec swim team defeated San Diego 33-24 in their season opening pentathlon meet Friday afternoon at the USD Sports Center Pool.
UCLA was also at the meet, but the Aztecs competed solely against the Toreros.
Elli Ferrin was the top Aztec finisher in the pentathlon events and was followed by McKenna Meyer and Evonne Stehr. SDSU topped the Toreros in every pentathlon event and earned the most points possible.
Ferrin had the top Aztec time in the 100 butterfly (59.30) and 100 backstroke (58.82). Meyer was the first SDSU finisher in the 100 IM (1:00.07) and finished third in the 100 butterfly (59.61). Stehr, making her collegiate debut, had the third fastest SDSU time in the 100 free (53.20) and the 100 IM (1:00.86).
Following the pentathlon events, the Aztecs competed in a series of 50 yard sprints. Cathy Cooper finished the 50 free in 24.53 and was followed by Mia Ryan (25.09) and Sammy Geyer (25.10). Ryan also finished second among Aztecs in the 50 fly (27.34) while Geyer had the top SDSU time in the 50 yard breast stroke (30.66).
Riley Tapley was the first Aztec to finish in the 50 butterfly (26.84) and had the second-best SDSU time in the 50 back (27.84).
THE NOTE
This marks the tenth consecutive season SDSU has opened its season with a pentathlon meet against San Diego, and the Aztecs have won nine of the last ten season-opening meetings.
