Aztec Storylines

  • The Aztecs went 0-1-1 in their two preseason friendlies. On August 19 they fell at UC Irvine 3-1 and this past Saturday they played UC San Diego to a 1-1 draw.
  • SDSU's regular season opener is August 30th when they host San Diego for the annual "Light the Night" match. The Aztecs knocked off USD 2-0 at Torero Stadium last year.
  • The Aztecs' first road match will be on Monday, September 2nd when they play at UNLV. SDSU beat the Rebels 2-1 at home last season.
  • Three of SDSU's first four matches are at home, but then the Aztecs will be on the road for five straight matches.
  • Pablo Pelaez was named to the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team. The redshirt senior led the Aztecs in points (15) and goals (six) last season and tied for the team lead with three assists.
  • The Aztecs return eight starters from a season ago.
  • SDSU has 11 seniors on their roster after only having four in 2018.
  • The Aztecs have the No. 10 2019 recruiting class in the country according to Top Drawer Soccer. SDSU has nine newcomers (eight freshmen and one transfer).
  • Former Aztec goalkeeper Tally Hall (2003-06) will be inducted into the Aztec Hall of Fame in October. A two-time All-American, Hall led the nation with an 88.9 save percentage and ranked second with a 0.49 goals allowed average in 2005. He also recorded 12 shutouts that season; all are single-season school records. After SDSU, he enjoyed a 10-year professional career, including eight seasons with the Houston Dynamo of MLS and was named a 2011 MLS All-Star

The Toreros went 7-7-5 last season and 3-1-3 in the WCC… They knocked off Cal Poly 2-0 in an exhibition match last season… USD was picked to finish third in the WCC preseason coaches poll… Senior Miguel Berry is USD's leading returner scorer. He had 18 points a season ago… Goalkeeper Matt Wiher started 16 matches a season ago and posted a 0.85 goals allowed average… USD is coached by Brian Quinn, who is in his second year after taking over for their longtime coach Seamus McFadden, who is still on the staff as an assistant. The Aztecs are 14-6-2 all-time against the Toreros and won last year's meeting 2-0.

UNLV
The Rebels went 10-10-1 in 2018 and 5-5-1 in the WAC… They posted a 4-3-1 record on their home pitch… UNLV was picked to finish fifth in the WAC preseason coaches poll… The Rebels had three players named to the preseason All-WAC team, tied for the most in the league: midfielder Timo Mehlich, forward Marco Gonzalez and defender Tyler Allen… UNLV returns seven starters and has 13 newcomers… They open the season at UC Santa Barbara on Friday… UNLV is on the road for five of its first six matches.
