The Aztecs fell 3-1 at UC Irvine on Monday in their first friendly of the 2019 season. Freshman Hunter George provided the scoring for SDSU with a goal in the 35th minute, which tied the match at 1-1. The Anteaters retook the lead three minutes later and added an insurance goal in the 81st minute.

Aztec Storylines

  • Pablo Pelaez was named to the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team. The redshirt senior led the Aztecs in points (15) and goals (six) last season and tied for the team lead with three assists.
  • The Aztecs return eight starters from a season ago.
  • SDSU has 11 seniors on their roster after only having four in 2018.
  • The Aztecs have the No. 10 2019 recruiting class in the country according to Top Drawer Soccer. SDSU has nine newcomers (eight freshmen and one transfer).
  • SDSU's regular season opener is August 30th when they host San Diego for the annual "Light the Night" match. The Aztecs knocked off USD 2-0 at Torero Stadium last year.
  • Three of SDSU's first four matches are at home, but then the Aztecs will be on the road for five straight matches.
  • Former Aztec goalkeeper Tally Hall (2003-06) will be inducted into the Aztec Hall of Fame in October. A two-time All-American, Hall led the nation with an 88.9 save percentage and ranked second with a 0.49 goals allowed average in 2005. He also recorded 12 shutouts that season; all are single-season school records. After SDSU, he enjoyed a 10-year professional career, including eight seasons with the Houston Dynamo of MLS and was named a 2011 MLS All-Star.

Opponent Notebook
The Tritons went 13-4-2 last season and posted a 7-3-2 mark in the CCAA… They were undefeated at home 11-0-1, but just 2-4-1 on the road… They return their top three leaders in points from 2018 including junior Jonathan Sabouri, who was led UCSD in points in each of his first two seasons… They also return goalkeeper Pedro Enciso, who has a career 0.81 goals against average.
