San Diego, Calif. – A program-record eight San Diego State women's water polo players as well as the team have earned academic recognition from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for the 2018-19 school year. The ACWPC made the announcement on Tuesday morning.
There are three levels of individual recognition. The highest level is the Outstanding Team consisting of student athletes who have a GPA between 3.71 and 4.00. Sophomore Dani D'Andrea landed on the Outstanding Team, the first time she has been honored by the ACWPC.
First-time honoree Haley Hagerty, a sophomore, is a member of the Superior Team, whose GPAs are between 3.41 and 3.70.
The remaining six student-athletes, freshmen Delaney Binette and Jessica Leckich, sophomores Emily Bennett and Lucia Carballo, junior Shelby Kraft and senior Hannah Carrillo were all recognized on the Excellent Team, with GPAs between 3.20 and 3.40.
Carballo, Carrillo and Kraft have now been recognized twice by the ACWPC for their work in the classroom. Carballo was a member of the Superior Team last year and Carrillo and Kraft were members of the Excellent Team in 2018.
Overall, the 2019 Aztecs had a cumulative GPA of 3.05. For its performance in the classroom, the program was one of 57 across all NCAA divisions recognized with Team All-Academic honors by the ACWPC.
Last month, San Diego State set a program record with 11 Golden Coast Conference All-Academic honors. The GCC recognized seniors Maura Cantoni and Carrillo; juniors Isabelle Hastings and Kraft; sophomores Bennett and Hagerty; and freshman Binette, Sydney Hurst, Leckich and Spencer Samuel for having a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 and playing in 50 percent of SDSU's games.
The Aztecs finished the 2019 campaign with a 16-16 record, 5-2 in Golden Coast Conference action and a No. 2 seed in the conference's championship tournament.
