SAN DIEGO – The Aztec water polo team celebrated their season with their annual end of the year Awards Banquet last week. Seniors Hannah Carrillo and Mary Myers along with Emily Bennett and Maddie Higginson were honored for their contributions to the team.
Hannah Carrillo, one of the team's captains, was given the Athletic Excellence Award. Carrillo, an all-GCC second-team selection, led the team with 41 assists and scored 42 goals. She had 13 multi-goal games, 12 games with two or more assists and six hat tricks.
Emily Bennett was the recipient of the Leadership Award, which goes to the player who embodies what the coaching staff looks for in a player, leader and teammate. Bennett led the Aztecs in goals (44), steals (72) and ejections drawn (71) and constantly led by example.
The Communication Award went to senior Mary Myers, whose vocal leadership made a huge difference for the Aztecs. She epitomized SDSU's commitment to team communication all season long.
Maddie Higginson was given the Growth & Development Award. Higginson embraced her role as a scorer off the bench, but also pushed herself to improve her all-around game, and eventually earned a starting role toward the end of the season.
