SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men's golf recruit Callum Bruce wrapped up his brilliant career at Midland College on Thursday by claiming the Jack Nicklaus NJCAA Player of the Year Award presented by Barbasol for the second straight season.
With his accolade, the Banff, Scotland, native becomes the only the second repeat winner of the award at the junior college level.
Earlier this month, Bruce captured medalist honors at the NJCAA Division I Championships at Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Florida, after shooting a combined 17-under-par 271 to win by four strokes over Central Alabama's Jack Poole.
At the national tournament, Bruce led the field with 22 birdies, including six en route to a final-round 66 on the par-72, 7,127-yard course layout. He was the lone golfer among 122 individuals to finish all four rounds in the 60s (69-69-67-66).
Collectively, Midland College placed third out of 24 schools with a 22-under 1,130, trailing only Central Alabama (-36) and Iowa's Indian Hills Community College (-23).
According to Golfstat, Bruce led the NJCAA with a 68.85 scoring average in 34 rounds this past season, winning six of 13 tournaments played, including a pair of titles at the elite Southwest Championships and NJCAA District 2 Championships to go with his national crown.
Bruce, who will compete for the Aztecs next fall, logged four additional top-five placements and finished outside of the top 10 in just one event for the entire year.
Last April at the Bearkat Invitational in Montgomery, Texas, Bruce finished seventh on the leaderboard in a field that featured 14 four-year schools.
In February, Bruce was the lone junior college competitor to earn a spot among 28 initial candidates for the Ben Hogan Award, which is given annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA golfer, taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during a 12-month period from June to May. He was also named to the PING NJCAA All-America team as a freshman.
