COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The San Diego State softball team had four players earn 2019 All-Mountain West honors, the league announced Wednesday. Junior Shelby Thompson made the first team for a third consecutive season, while Taylor Adams, Alicia Garcia and Marissa Moreno all earned their first MW accolade as second-team selections.
The awards, which are based on Mountain West games only, are voted on by the league's nine head coaches.
Thompson, who last year was the MW Defensive Player of the Year and in 2017 was the MW Freshman of the Year, hit .403 (31-for-77) with three home runs, eight RBIs, 13 runs, five doubles and nine walks, posting a .472 on-base percentage and a .584 slugging percentage. Overall, Thompson led the Aztecs in batting average (.336), slugging percentage (.470), walks (20), on-base percentage (.421) and sacrifice flies (3).
In league play, Adams batted .346 (27-for-78) with four home runs, 15 RBIs, 10 runs and two doubles, recording a .378 on-base mark and a .526 slugging percentage. Overall, she hit .327 with four homers, 24 RBIs, 18 runs, six doubles, a .350 on-base percentage and a .447 slugging percentage.
Garcia, meanwhile was 6-1 in the circle in league action with a 2.72 ERA. She struck out 23 in 54 innings across 16 appearances and eight starts, limiting the opposition to a .282 average. At the plate, Garcia batted .278 (10-for-36) with two RBIs. Overall on the season, Garcia finished her first year with SDSU with a 10-6 record and a 3.63 ERA in 100 1/3 innings, starting 14 times and pitching in 33 games altogether. She also hit .235 with a homer and five RBIs at the plate.
Moreno, who was named the MW Pitcher of the Week on May 7 as part of a San Diego State sweep over Fresno State, went 6-8 in league play with a 2.80 ERA and three saves. She struck out 62 in 20 appearances, completing four of the 11 games she started, and held the opposition to a .217 batting average. Overall, Moreno was 12-12 with a 3.01 ERA and four saves in 151 1/3 innings, striking out 120 with a .230 opponent average.
The Aztecs, who recently announced the addition of Oregon standout Maggie Balint to the roster for the 2020 season, will return all four of their all-MW selections from this year, their top-two hitters, eight of their top 10 and their entire pitching staff.
