FRESNO, Calif. – San Diego State men's tennis senior Sander Gjoels-Andersen (Klampenborg, Denmark) and sophomore Ignacio Martinez (Weston, Fla.) garnered all-Mountain West accolades at the conference's championship banquet on Wednesday evening.
Gjoels-Andersen merited his first all-MW singles honor as a collegian after collecting his second straight all-league certificate in doubles, teaming with another first-time recipient in Martinez.
Gjoels-Andersen and Martinez have combined to form the Aztecs' most successful doubles tandem in dual matches, logging a 6-2 record at the No. 1 position, including a 3-2 mark in the MW. The duo was the first SDSU doubles tandem off the court in their six of their first seven outings this spring, emerging victorious in all but one match, including team shutouts over Eastern Washington, Boise State and Nevada.
In his final season on The Mesa, Gjoels-Andersen shares the team lead with 12 victories in dual-match play and owns a career-best 16-11 record overall. Since his ascension to the No. 1 spot on the Aztecs' ladder March 16, the SDSU captain has compiled a 6-3 ledger, including a 4-2 mark in the MW, highlighted by wins over fellow all-conference honorees Eric Samuelsson of UNLV, Patrick Sklenka of Air Force and Isaac Arevalo Gómez of Utah State, who was also named the league's freshman of the year.
Competing as the No. 4 seed, San Diego State will take on fifth-seeded UNLV on Thursday in the opening round of the MW Championship at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif. The Aztecs-Rebels clash is scheduled to get underway no earlier than noon PT, with live stats and streaming video available on GoAztecs.com.
