LOS ANGELES – Four members of the Aztec water polo team received all-GCC honors, the conference office announced Wednesday morning. Emily Bennett was a first-team selection, senior co-captains Hannah Carrillo and Maura Cantoni were named to the second-team and Sydney Hurst made the all-freshman team.
Bennett, a sophomore utility from Oakdale, Calif., led SDSU in virtually every statistical category. She posted team-high figures in goals (40), steals (68) and ejections drawn (63). Her 68 steals easily led the GCC. She was also second on the team in assists (24) and field blocks (14). She had 19 games with multiple steals, 12 games with two or more goals and a team-best five hat tricks. This is her second time being an all-GCC selection; last year she was named to the all-GCC second-team and all-freshman team.
For Carrillo, it is her third time earning all-GCC recognition. She was an all-freshman team pick in 2016 and a first-team selection last year. A local product from The Bishop's School in La Jolla, Carrillo was second on the team in goals (38) and had a team-high 38 assists in 2019. She had 11 games with two or more assists and 12 games with multiple goals. The senior co-captain also had 31 steals and drew 29 ejections.
Senior goalkeeper Maura Cantoni (San Jose, Calif.) earns her second consecutive all-GCC second-team honor after collecting a league-high 226 saves. The senior co-captain had eight of San Diego State's nine double-figure save efforts, posted 17 shutout quarters and had two games with 17 saves. Cantoni was one of two GCC goalies to make either the first or second team. This is the sixth straight season in which an Aztec goalkeeper has earned all-Golden Coast recognition.
Sydney Hurst (Simi Valley, Calif.) finished the regular season of her freshman year with 16 goals. She was second on the team with 39 ejections drawn and had 13 steals and three assists. This is the fifth consecutive season SDSU has had a GCC all-freshman team honoree.
The Aztecs begin the GCC Tournament this Friday in Fresno, Calif. As the No. 2 seed, they will face seventh-seeded Santa Clara at 3:15 p.m.
