IRVING, Texas -- Former San Diego State football cornerback Ron Smith has been named to the 2019 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced today. To be eligible for the award, the athlete must own at least a 3.2 undergraduate GPA, complete his final year of eligibility in 2018 and be a starter or significant contributor throughout the 2018 campaign.
Smith, who started the final 32 games of his career, had 44 tackles a year ago and added seven pass breakups. He was a Wuerffel Trophy nominee, which goes out to FBS players that best combine exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement, and was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District 8 Football Team. At the team's end of the year banquet, he earned the President's Award for High Athletic and Academic Excellence.
Over his career, Smith totaled 163 tackles (101 solo), 3.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions, 26 pass breakups and two forced fumbles. Smith's 16 pass breakups in 2017 were the second most in a season in program history.
San Diego State finished the 2018 campaign with a 7-6 record, highlighted by wins over No. 23/25 Arizona State and rv/No. 24 Boise State. The Aztecs, who return their leading passer (Ryan Agnew), rusher (Juwan Washington) and tackler (Kyahva Tezino) from a year ago, are one of 14 teams to make a bowl game in nine consecutive seasons.
