BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- San Diego State's Bonnie Draxler finished second in the pole vault at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.
A senior, Draxler cleared 4.56 meters (14 feet, 11 ½ inches), the best mark of her career. The 4.56 mark also broke her own Mountain West and school record.
Draxler, who recently was named the USTFCCCA West Region Field Athlete of the Year, cleared 4.56 meters on her first attempt and was the only competitor to clear the bar at that height. Alexis Jacobus of Arkansas passed on the 4.56 height, but cleared 4.61 meters (15-01.50) on her second attempt to move into first place. Draxler was unable to match Jacobus at 4.61 meters and had to settle for second place, the best finish of her career. Draxler previously finished 16th in the event at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships and 21st at the 2017 outdoor meet.
Draxler's eight points as the runner-up finisher gave the Aztecs a 27th-place tie with five other teams.
QUOTE OF THE MEET
Bonnie Draxler: "It feels absolutely amazing! It's a dream come true. I couldn't have done it without the help and support from my coaches, teammates, friends and family. God is so good! It has been an honor to represent SDSU and my home state of Wisconsin, and I can't wait to continue my season outdoors."
STAT OF THE MEET
Draxler's vault of 4.56 meters (14-11.05) is tied for the eighth-best mark by an American this season (college or pro).
