SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State baseball fell short against No. 14/11 Texas Tech, falling 5-1 on Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Texas Tech improves to 7-3 on the year, while SDSU falls to 5-5.
Starting pitcher Aaron Eden continued his early college career success, recording is second consecutive quality start after hurling five innings and allowing just one run off of six hits and striking out three. Eden's lone run allowed came in the first inning, eventually settling in and facing just two over the minimum in his final four innings of work.
Facing a 1-0 hole, the Aztecs lone run came in the bottom of the fifth after Matt Rudick led off the frame with a leadoff single and eventually came around to score on a Joe Fitzhugh sacrifice fly.
Texas Tech broke the 1-1 tie in the sixth, using a Dylan Neuse RBI double before adding three insurance runs in the seventh to bring the score to its final, 5-1.
From the first and second spots in the lineup, both Rudick (2-for-5) and Escobedo (2-for-4) led the Aztecs with two hits each.
Adrian Mardueno shined out of the bullpen for the Aztecs, posting 2.1 innings of shutout relief with only one hit allowed.
Micah Dallas (1-0) earned the win for the Red Raiders while O'Sullivan (2-2) earned the loss for the Aztecs.
Notes
· SDSU had a span of 146 consecutive games without suffering a three-game losing streak come to a close after Tuesday night's loss.
· SDSU falls to 35-8 in games following a loss over the last three seasons.
· Jacob Maekawa extended his team-best on-base streak to eight games.
· Matt Rudick and Julian Escobedo both recorded their third multi-hit games of the season.
· Aaron Eden had a streak of 10 consecutive scoreless innings snapped, but has allowed just one run over his last 14.2 innings pitched. Eden currently boasts a team-best 1.08 ERA with a team-high 16.2 innings pitched after starting recording his second consecutive quality start.
· SDSU drew nine walks, the most in a single game since walking nine times against Fresno State on April 21, 2018.
· SDSU left a season-high 13 runners on base. 13 runners left on base also marks as the 2018 team's season-high, which it did on three occasions last year.
