COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomore infielder/right-handed pitcher Casey Schmitt of the San Diego State baseball team was named Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday. The award marks as the first Player of the Week award of Schmitt's college career.
In a week where the Aztecs posted a perfect 4-0 record, Schmitt hit 10-for-18 (.556) with a double, two triples, and a home run. On the mound, Schmitt earned his first win of the season on Sunday, allowing four hits and two runs over five innings pitched in SDSU's sweep-clinching 11-5 win over Seattle.
After a standout week, the Baseball America Preseason Second-Team All-American is now second on the team with a .370 batting average and first with a .574 slugging percentage. The Eastlake HS product currently rides a six-game hitting streak and has reached base in each of his last 10 games.
Schmitt tied his career high with four hits in a 4-for-5 showing on Sunday against Seattle, finishing just a triple shy of the cycle while driving in a pair of runs.
Winners of four in a row and six of their last seven, SDSU (11-7) travels to Los Angeles tomorrow for a 6:00 p.m. contest at Loyola Marymount (11-7).
