SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State rowing team prepares to travel to the Sacramento area this weekend where it will compete in the Hornet Invitational, hosted by Sacramento State. The two-day event spans Saturday and Sunday, March, 16-17, on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
The Aztecs will compete in a total of seven events on Saturday, with the first four races occurring in the morning block and the last three in the afternoon wave. San Diego State's morning wave will feature four events where the team will compete against Sacramento State, first with the varsity eight at 8:15 a.m. The Aztecs and Hornets will compete in second varsity eight in an 8:45 a.m. start, followed by the varsity four at 9:15 a.m. The final event of the morning will be the third varsity/novice eight race, where the Aztecs will compete against the Sac State 3V8 A and B boats beginning at 9:45 a.m.
The Scarlet and Black are set to race the crews from Saint Mary's in the afternoon wave, which kicks off with a 3:15 p.m. V8 race. In the 3:45 p.m. 2V8 race, the Aztecs will enter both their 2V8 and 3V8 boats in the event and Saint Mary's will only enter its 2V8 crew, while the Aztecs' V4 crew will race against both Saint Mary's V4 A and B boats in the 4:20 p.m. event.
Sunday's competition is limited to four total morning events against Kansas State, beginning at 8 a.m. with the V8 race. The two teams will compete in the 2V8 at 8:20 a.m., followed by the 8:40 a.m. V4 race, in which K-State will enter two vessels. The final race of the weekend comes at 9 a.m. when the Aztecs and Wildcats will compete in the 3V8 event.
Last season, the Aztecs recorded five first-place finishes on Saturday with faster times in the varsity four events against Gonzaga (A & B crews), Sacramento State and Saint Mary's (A & B). SDSU also led Saint Mary's in the varsity eight and both the Aztec 2V8 and 3V8 crews finished ahead of the Gaels in the 2V8 event. The Scarlet and Black added two more first-place finishes on Sunday against K-State when they came in ahead of the Wildcats in both the varsity eight and 3V8 races.
The Aztecs competed in their first formal race of the spring last Saturday when they earned second-place finishes in the varsity four, varsity eight and 2V8 events at UCLA, and came in third in their 3V8 event against the Bruins in Marina del Rey, Calif.
