SAN DIEGO – San Diego State's Gioia Carpinelli (Bopplesen, Switzerland) has been named Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Week after capturing medalist honors at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational on March 12.

With her accolade, the Aztec sophomore collected the second conference weekly honor of her career and SDSU's first of the season.

Carpinelli, who claimed her first individual title as a collegian last Tuesday, was the only player in the 92-golfer field at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational to finish in red figures after finishing at 1-under-par 215 (70-75-70) for the tournament.

During the final round, she fired a 2-under 70 to climb four places in the standings on a day in which only seven players broke par against a field scoring average of 77.53.

In addition, Carpinelli topped seven competitors in the event ranked among the Golfstat individual top 75, including including No. 22 Olivia Mehaffey of Arizona State, No. 37 Yu-Sang Hou of Arizona, No. 39 Elle Slama of Oregon State and No. 50 Haley Moore of Arizona.

Not to be outdone, Carpinelli led the field with a 3.93 (-2) scoring average on par-4 holes and tied for second in the tournament with a team-high 11 birdies for the week.

With her performance, Carpinelli vaulted 25 places into the 51st position in the latest Golfstat individual rankings. She owns a team-best 72.62 scoring average so far this season and has been the Aztecs' top finisher in five of six team events, posting three top-five placements.

Carpinelli and the Aztecs return to the fairways at their own Lamkin Invitational, scheduled for March 25-27, at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
