SAN DIEGO  The San Diego State rowing team officially kicks off its spring slate this Saturday, March 9, when it goes head-to-head with the Bruins at the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center in Marina del Rey, Calif. The first of four events is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Ballona Creek.

The Aztecs are set to compete in four total events and plan to enter one boat in each event. First off on Saturday morning will be the third varsity eight at 9:30 a.m., followed by the varsity four at 9:45 a.m. The second varsity eight boats get underway at the top of the 10 o'clock hour, while the event concludes with the varsity eight race set for 10:15 a.m.

The Aztecs begin formal spring competition coming off two events during the fall season as well as two scrimmages in the month of February, first with Minnesota and later against OCC, UCSD and USD. In October 2018, the Scarlet and Black opened the year with wins by their top boats in all three events at the 18th annual Row for the Cure on Mission Bay, where the team beat crews from USD and UCSD.

SDSU also logged four top-five finishes in the San Diego Fall Classic's open eight and novice eight races last November, punctuated by a first place finish in the novice eight event against crews from USC, Arizona State, USD, UC Irvine, Orange Coast College and Long Beach State. SDSU's three open eight boats came in second (A boat), third (B boat) and fifth (C boat), and the SDSU A crew was edged by USD's A boat by a mere three seconds.

Spectators are welcome at Saturday's regatta and can park for free at Dock 52 (10-15 minute walk) or pay for parking at Fisherman's Village (five-minute walk). Spectator parking will not be available at the boathouse. Results from Saturday's events will be available on GoAztecs.com following the conclusion of the final race.
