SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State football head coach Rocky Long announced the hiring Wednesday of Ron Caragher as the tight ends and passing game coordinator. Caragher served as the team's on-campus recruiting coordinator and offensive quality control coach in 2018.

Prior to his arrival at SDSU, Caragher spent 10 years as a head coach in the collegiate ranks at San José State (2013-16) and the University of San Diego (2007-12), amassing an overall record of 63-52.

In 2015, Caragher led SJSU to its fourth consecutive bowl victory since 1990 after defeating Georgia State in the AutoNation Cure Bowl. That season, the Spartans occupied the second spot nationally in fewest passing yards allowed and net punting, while ranking 12th in third down conversions and 34th in total defense.

Individually, Caragher's SJSU players garnered 32 all-Mountain West accolades and nine postseason all-star invitations to go with five NFL Draft selections.

While at USD, Caragher guided the Toreros to a trio of Pioneer Football League co-championships (2007, 2011, 2012) and was twice nominated for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year honors, which recognizes the top head coach in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).  In addition, he was named the 2011 PFL Coach of the Year after directing USD to a 9-2 for the third time in five years and a FCS Coaches Top 25 ranking during the regular season.

Before landing the Toreros job, Caragher spent four seasons as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Kentucky from 2003-06 after coaching wide receivers, kickers and punters during a seven-year stint at his alma mater UCLA from 1996-2002.

In addition, Long announced that Kevin McGarry will take over as quality control coach and on-campus recruiting coordinator.

San Diego State finished the 2018 campaign with a 7-6 record, highlighted by wins over No. 23/25 Arizona State and rv/No. 24 Boise State. The Aztecs, who return their leading passer (Ryan Agnew), rusher (Juwan Washington) and tackler (Kyahva Tezino) from a year ago, are one of 14 teams to make a bowl game in nine consecutive seasons.
