COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following a week in which the Aztecs defeated their highest-ranked opponent in school history, extending their season-long win streak to five games, San Diego State senior guard Devin Watson has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week. An Aztec player has earned the award three times in the last six weeks.
Watson, who helped lead the Aztecs to victories over No. 6 Nevada on Wednesday and at UNLV on Saturday, led the team this week in scoring (14.0), assists (6.0), steals (2.0) and minutes played (37.5). He also averaged 5.5 rebounds in the two victories.
In the 65-57 home win over the Wolf Pack, Watson recorded a team-high 15 points, game-high eight assists and five rebounds in 39 minutes of action. In the last 16 seasons, the only other Aztec player to produce a game with at least 15 points and eight assists against a top 25 team was Trey Kell last season against No. 21 Nevada on March 3, 2018.
Watson followed that performance up with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the road win at UNLV. He became the first Aztec player to produce a 13-4-4-3 stat line in a road game since Winston Shepard did at Utah State on Jan. 2, 2016.
Watson is playing some of the best basketball of his career. He has scored 13 or more points in a career-high 11 consecutive games, averaging 17.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and connecting on 40.0 percent of his three-point field goal attempts during that span. For the season, he is averaging 16.3 points, 4.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds, while connecting on 38.8 percent from three-point range.
The Aztecs will carry their five-game winning streak into tomorrow's game at Utah State. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. PT with coverage set for CBS Sports Network, 101.5 KGB and XTRA 1360.
SDSU returns home for the first of two remaining home games this season Saturday against San José State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT with tickets available at GoAztecs.com.
