ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Aztec track and field team wrapped up day one at the Mountain West Indoor Championships in a tie for fifth place (through two events) after receiving some crucial points from Asia Smith, who finished second in the pentathlon.

Smith, a sophomore, finished with 3,916 points for the third most points in a pentathlon in school history. She set a new PR in four of the five events and had top three finishes in the high jump, shotput and long jump.

Smith began the day with a fifth place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.79, just 0.02 seconds off her career best time. In the next event, the high jump, she cleared 5-07.00 (1.70m), which tied Aztec legend Shanieka (Thomas) Ricketts for the third best jump in program history.

Smith then had a shotput throw of 12.54m, also a new personal best. In the fourth event, the high jump, she cleared 5.81, just 0.01 meters off the top finisher, Nicola Ader of Nevada.

Smith finished the final event, the 800m run, in tenth place, but posted a new personal best time 2:36.13.

The Aztecs also competed in the distance medley relay, the first time they've run this event this season, finishing in 11th place (12.33.68).
