SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State water polo team fell to the Aztec alumni squad 12-9 in overtime in the annual Alumni game. This is the second consecutive year the alumni edged out the Aztecs. Ioli Benekou and Emily Lowell led the alumni with three goals each.
The alumni outscored SDSU 3-1 in the opening quarter. The Aztecs responded with three goals in the second quarter, but the alums netted three as well to take a 6-4 lead in to the halftime break.
The Aztecs scored the next two goals to tie the match. The first came from Maddy Parenteau and then was followed by Haley Hagerty.
Both squads scored three goals in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The Aztec goals came from Emily Bennett, Lucia Carballo and another from Parenteau, who joined Mary Myers for a team-high two goals.
The alumni outscored SDSU 3-0 in overtime with one goal in the first period and two in the second.
Shelby Kraft led the Aztecs with four steals.
Maura Cantoni played the first half and had a team-high three saves. Mia Harris played the third quarter and did not allow a goal while making two saves. Zoe Morgan also collected two saves.
