LAS VEGAS – San Diego State volleyball fell in a straight-set (15-25, 23-25, 22-25) decision on Thursday night, falling to UNLV at Cox Pavillion in a Mountain West contest.
Statistically, the Aztecs were led by Ashlynn Dunbar's 10 kills, Deja Harris' eight blocks, and Loren Teter's 15 digs. Offense was at a premium for both teams, however, as UNLV outhit SDSU, .183 - .081.
The match started as a tight-knit battle, but with UNLV holding a 12-10 lead, the Rebels went on a 5-0 spurt to take a commanding 17-10 lead. UNLV used another run to close the set, scoring each of the game's final six points en route to a 25-15 victory.
SDSU improved upon a slow first set and held the Rebels to just a .061 hitting percentage for the second set. The Aztecs had offensive struggles of their own, however, as eight attack errors against seven kills hindered the Aztecs in a 25-22 second set loss.
The Aztecs held a 23-22 advantage in the second after a UNLV attack error. From there, the Rebels used a set-clinching 3-0 run after capitalizing on a pair of SDSU attack errors and a Mariena Hayden kill.
The third set was once again close in the late stages, with UNLV owning a slim 22-20 lead after a Hannah Turnlund kill. Another late-set kill by Turnlund brought the score to 23-21, but the Rebels went on to win three of the next four points to bring the set to its final margin of 25-22.
NOTES
- SDSU held its opponent to a hitting percentage below .200 for the 10th time this season.
- Deja Harris brought her career block assist total to 468, good for third in program history and is just three shy of tying Andrea Hannasch (2009-12) for second in the SDSU record book.
