SCENE SETTER (through games of Nov. 3)
* San Diego State enters the final quarter of the regular season and starts three consecutive games with Mountain West, West Division foes when the Aztecs play host to UNLV on Saturday.
* The Aztecs control their own destiny in a quest to win their 22nd conference championship. SDSU is currently one-game behind division leader Fresno State.
* The Aztecs and Rebels are meeting for the 28th time with SDSU owning an 18-9 series lead. San Diego State has won the last four encounters by a combined score of 153-48 (38.3-12.0) and seven of the last eight meetings.
* In San Diego, the Aztecs are 11-3 against the Rebels, with victories in the last eight games played at SDCCU/Qualcomm Stadium. UNLV's last victory against SDSU in the venue came on Nov. 25, 2000.
* SDSU has won seven consecutive home games (5-0 this season) and is 20-3 at SDCCU Stadium dating back to Oct. 3, 2015.
* SDSU associate head coach/offensive coordinator/running backs coach Jeff Horton was the head coach at UNLV from 1994-98, and was an assistant coach there from 1990-91. In 1994 he was named the Big West Conference coach of the year, leading the Rebels to the conference title and a berth in the Las Vegas Bowl. Aztec wide receivers coach Hunkie Cooper played collegiately for UNLV from 1990-91. Cooper, who saw action at six different positions with the Rebels, scored four touchdowns in his first DI game.
NEWS AND NOTES (through games of Nov. 3)
* The Aztecs are 38-8 in their last 46 overall games and 26-5 in their last 31 regular-season games against Mountain West opponents (28-5 against MW opponents, including conference championship games).
* SDSU has played seven consecutive games that have been decided by one score (eight or less points), recording a 6-1 record during that stretch. This is the longest active streak in the FBS and the longest streak for any FBS team since 2000 (UCLA, 8).
* San Diego State is 10-2 in its last 12 games decided by eight points or less and is 24-10 in one-score games in the Rocky Long era.
* San Diego State is currently 10th nationally in total defense, allowing only 287.4 yards per game. The Aztecs have been particularly effective on that side of the ball of late, holding its opponents to 297 yards or less in five consecutive games.
* San Diego State is in the mix for three of the nation's longest streaks in total defense. SDSU has held five straight opponents to less than 300 yards of total offense (2nd-longest active FBS streak), nine straight opponents to less than 400 yards of total offense (4th-longest active FBS streak) and 24 straight opponents to less than 500 yards (5th-longest active streak).
* The Aztecs have won 25 consecutive games when owning a turnover advantage. That is the nation's longest active streak.
* There are only 15 teams in the nation that have fewer losses than San Diego State (2). There are four undefeated teams and 11 teams with one defeat. Fourteen teams have lost two games this season meaning that only 30 of the 129 FBS teams nationally have two losses are fewer.
