SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis hosted the first round of the SDSU Fall Classic I on Friday where the team captured wins in four of five doubles matches and six of 10 singles pairings.
In doubles action, freshman Shakhnoza Khatamova and senior Jenny Moinard teamed up to defeat Rylee Braeden and Madeline Lamoureaux of Eastern Washington, 6-4, in flight A, while freshmen Ellie Ashley and Lauren Anderson topped Marquette's Alexandrina Chinikova Lesley Foe, 7-6 (5).
In flight B, sophomore Nnena Nadozie and senior Magda Aubets downed Cal Poly's Grace Olyphant and Susanne Boyden, 6-2, and junior Mia Smith and sophomore Abbie Mulbarger thwarted Mustangs Mackenzie Worsnop and Claire Bouquet, 6-0.
In flight C, freshmen Agustina Rimoldi Godoy and Aesha Patel were unable to catch Louise Waite and Yasmin Mansouri (EWU), falling 6-4.
In singles action, Moinard remained dominant with a victory over Fleur Eggink (MU), 6-1, 6-0, in flight A, while Nadozie chased away Kimberley Bhunu (CP) in her third set to claim a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (3) win. Smith's success from doubles also carried over to singles where she defeated Zoey Nelson (EWU), 6-4, 6-4, in flight C.
The Aztecs split decisions in flight D, where Mulbarger topped Rylee Braeden (EWU), 6-3, 6-3, but Khatamova was unable to overcome Cal Poly's Olyphant, dropping a narrow 7-6 (10), 6-4 decision. In flight E, SDSU once again went one-and-one where Aubets fell 6-4, 6-1 to Utah's Anya Lamoreaux, but Rimoldi Godoy captured a 6-1, 7-5 win over Colorado's Ky Ecton.
Anderson claimed the sole Aztec win in Flight F, where she came away with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over conference foe Jane Ellis of Fresno State. Ashley faced a tough 6-4. 6-3 loss to Utah's Leah Heimuli, while Patel dropped a three-set match to Stephanie Broussard (EWU), 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Competition continues with day two on Saturday, Nov. 10. Doubles action is set to begin once again at 9 a.m. with singles play immediately following.
Admission to Fall Classic II is free and fans are encouraged to park in P7 on the corner of 55th Street and Montezuma Road. The Aztec Tennis Center is located just beyond Tony Gwynn Stadium, SDSU Softball Stadium and the Aztec Aquaplex on the northwest edge of campus.
