STANFORD, Calif. – The San Diego State women's golf team remains in a tie for 10th place at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Saturday after shooting a collective 7-over-par 291 during the second round at Stanford Golf Course.
Despite trimming three strokes off Friday's total, the Aztecs were unable to gain any ground, landing in the 10th position with San José State at 17-over 585 through 36 holes on the par-71, 6,171-yard configuration.
SDSU sophomores Sara Kjellker (Hollviken, Sweden) and Gioia Carpinelli (Boppelsen, Switzerland) climbed one notch into a tie for 19th on the individual leaderboard at 1-over 143 after each fired an even-par 71.
After making bogey on the par-4 No. 10, Kjellker played spot-free golf down the stretch, logging five pars and two birdies, including a successful conversion on the par-4, 386-yard 13th, which ranks as the sixth-toughest hole of the weekend thus far.
Carpinelli turned in a nearly identical card, offsetting two bogeys with two drains of her own on the par-5, 473-yard No. 12 and the par-5, 490-yard 16th.
Fernanda Escauriza (Asunción, Paraguay), who entered the day in a tie with Carpinelli and Kjellker, was unable to keep pace, however, dropping 20 places into a tie for 40th at 5-over 147 after settling for a 75. The Aztec junior sank just one birdie on the par-3, 165-yard, which ranked as the fourth-most difficult hole of the second round, but five bogeys, including three straight on holes 11-13, proved too much to overcome.
Despite shaving four strokes off her total from round one, Cameron Lee (Tustin, Calif.) slipped two places into a tie for 73rd at 10-over 152 after recording a 74 on Saturday. The SDSU sophomore was a model of consistency for the most part, logging a team-high 15 pars, but three bogeys, including back-to-back blemishes on the 16th and 17th greens, precipitated her drop.
The Aztec lineup also included senior Daniela Anastasi (La Jolla, Calif.), who finds herself in a tie for 87th at 21-over 163 on the heels of a second-round 83.
USC (-10) maintained its perch atop the team standings despite shooting a 2-over 286, while Northwestern (-1) jumped into second, followed by Stanford (E), Pepperdine (+3) and Washington (+3), as the Huskies carded the low round on Saturday with a combined 9-under 275.
Buoyed by a second-round 62, UCLA's Mariel Galdiano (-9) vaulted into the individual lead, three shots ahead of Stanford's Albane Valenzuela (-6), while Pepperdine's Hira Naveed (-5) occupies the third position, followed by USC Alyaa Abdulghany (-4).
The Stanford Intercollegiate concludes on Sunday when San Diego State tees off alongside Iowa State and San José State for the final round, starting at 8:30 a.m. PT on hole No. 10.
