SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State rowing team dominated with wins in its three events on Saturday at the 18th annual Row for the Cure, hosted by UC San Diego. The Aztecs topped their opponents in the open eight, novice eight and open four out on Mission Bay.
SDSU kicked off the morning with a win by their top boat in the open eight at 7:40 a.m. The Aztec A crew, comprised mostly of veterans and three rowers with national-level experience, clocked in at 12:22, finishing four seconds ahead of USD's A crew (12:26). Next across the finish line was SDSU B with a time of 12:37, followed by SDSU C (13:09). USD B followed close behind with a time of 13:14, followed by UCSD B (13:20) and UCSD A (13:28). The USD C boat was a scratch.
The Aztecs created an enormous gap between their and USD's novice eight crews in the 7:50 a.m. race, with SDSU clocking in just shy of 14 minutes with a time of 13:58. The Toreros finished minutes later, recording a time of 19:17.
The final event of the day for the Aztecs was the open four race at 9 a.m., where 11 total boats competed for the best finish. SDSU came out on top once again with two of its four crews claiming the top spots as SDSU A finished in 13:41 and SDSU B clocked in at 13:51. USD A finished third in 13:55 while SDSU D and C finished fourth (14:21) and fifth (14:24), respectively. Rounding out the second half of finishers was UCSD C (14:32), USD B (14:54), UCSD A (15:14), USD C (15:22), UCSD B (15:35) and USD D (20:29).
