TULSA, Okla. – San Diego State men's tennis player Sander Gjoels-Andersen (Klampenborg, Denmark) had his spirited run halted in the pre-qualifying bracket of the 2018 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships on Sunday after splitting two matches at Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The Aztec senior, who opened with two victories on Saturday, kept the momentum rolling in the round of 64 with a 6-1, 6-4 conquest of Old Dominion's Jannik Giesse, but could not stave off elimination against Notre Dame's William Howells, who claimed a 6-4, 6-4 decision in the round of 32.
SDSU also had two players compete in the pre-qualifying singles consolation bracket on Sunday, with sophomore Jan Kirchhoff (Berlin, Germany) posting a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Brandon Freestone of Georgia Tech. However, junior Arnaud Restifo (Nice, France) experienced the opposite fate, falling just short in a hotly contested super-tiebreaker to Simon Junk of Ole Miss, 2-6, 7-6(4), 10-7.
Gjoels-Andersen will return to the court on Monday when he joins forces with sophomore Ignacio Martinez (Weston, Fla.) in the qualifying doubles bracket. The Aztec tandem will face the Florida duo of Andy Andrade and Oliver Crawford in their round of 64 match, beginning at 2:30 p.m. CT/12:30 p.m. PT.
San Diego State returns to The Mesa next weekend to host the Aztec Fall Invitational, Oct. 5-7, at Aztec Tennis Center.
