NEWS AND NOTES (through games of Sept. 29)
* San Diego State and Boise State, the two teams that have combined to win the last four Mountain West titles (Aztecs in 2015, 2016; Broncos in 2014 and 2017), meet in SDSU's conference opener on Saturday afternoon in Boise, Idaho.
* Since the start of the 2013 campaign when the league split into two divisions, Boise State (32-9) and San Diego State (31-9) own the best records in Mountain West action. Colorado State (26-15) is third on the chart.
* San Diego State is one of only seven schools nationally to record 10 or more victories in each of the last three seasons (Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, San Diego State and Wisconsin).
* San Diego State's 3-1 record is rated as the 28th best strength of record according to ESPN, thanks in part to the 11-8 record of the Aztecs' first four opponents.
* The Aztecs carry a three-game overall winning streak into the game (34-7 in last 41 overall games), and also have won four straight Mountain West games (22-4 in last 26 games against MW opponents) and five straight road games against Mountain West teams (12-1 in last 13 road games against MW opponents).
* San Diego State is one of the youngest teams in the nation. In both of the last two games, SDSU has played more freshmen than seniors (Arizona State: 9 seniors, 14 freshmen and Eastern Michigan: 10 seniors, 14 freshmen).
* SDSU has had 12 seniors see the field this season, logging a total of 27 starts (6.8 per game) and 40 games played (10 per game).
* Five San Diego State seniors have started every game in 2018 - AZT Parker Baldwin, LB Ronley Lakalaka, DE Anthony Luke, DE Chibu Onyeukwu and RT Ryan Pope. Only one of those players (Pope) is on the offensive side of the ball.
* Last time out, San Diego State overcame the loss of six starters for either all or part of the game to defeat Eastern Michigan, 23-20 in overtime. Senior PK John Baron II converted three field goals, including a 50-yard boot with 1:16 remaining to force the extra session and a 38-yard kick for the walk-off winner in OT.
* An All-American candidate, Baron, who has earned MW Special Teams Player-of-the-Week honors after each of the last two Aztec games, is the FBS active career leader in field goal percentage (.872) and field goal percentage in road games (.905), and is tied for the most field goals from at least 50 yards in 2018 (3).
* Sophomore RB Chase Jasmin logged a career-high 31 offensive snaps vs. Eastern Michigan and rushed for 94 yards on 16 carries (5.9 ypc). Jasmin, filling in for injured Maxwell Award candidate Juwan Washington, earned nearly every one of his rushing yards (82 of his 94 yards) after contact. Jasmin had five avoided tackles in the game.
* Jasmin, who has induced 13 missed tackles on 43 carries this season (Washington ranks third in the category with 28), has 233 yards rushing on just 43 carries this season (5.4 ypc). Missed tackle figures per Pro Football Focus.
* Junior LB Kyahva Tezino leads the team in tackles (32), tackles for loss (3.5) and sacks (2). PFF ratings have him as the top performer ILB and his 22 defensive stops on the season are tied for the seventh most in the nation through games of Sept. 22.
