SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis hosted the first round of the SDSU Fall Classic I on Friday, capturing one doubles victory and four singles wins throughout the day.
In doubles action, senior Magda Aubets and sophomore Nnena Nadozie put up a point for the Aztecs with a 6-2 win over Grand Canyon's Ludovica Infantino and Valentina Mokrova in the black draw. In that same draw, senior Jenny Moinard and junior Mia Smith were unable to rout UTEP's Vanessa Valdez and Kirsten Prelle, dropping a 7-6 (4) decision.
In the red doubles bracket, freshmen Lauren Anderson and Ellie Ashley fell to Air Force's Elizabeth Barnickel and Rine Nozaki, 6-4, while newcomer Agustina Rimoldi Godoy and sophomore Abbie Mulbarger dropped a 6-1 match to CSUN's Emma Roenholt and Sibel Demirbaga.
In singles action, Nadozie continued her success from doubles play to log a 6-2, 6-0 victory over GCU's Martina Lo Pumo in the white draw. In that same bracket, Aubets was unable to snag a close first set against CSUN's Jolene Coetzee and ultimately fell in two, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
In the gold bracket, Moinard rallied back from losing her first set to dominate in the second and third against UTEPs Vanessa Valdez, winning 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 to advance in the championship rounds. Moinard's doubles partner, Smith, also competed in the gold draw where she ultimately dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Monika Van de Vondel (CSUN).
Newcomer Ashley tallied another point towards SDSU's total with a solid 6-4, 6-4 victory over GCU's Autum Prudhomme in the silver singles draw, which is being played as a round robin bracket.
Mulbarger logged the final Aztec victory for the day with her speedy 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ludovica Infantino (GCU) in the red singles draw. Rimoldi Godoy took on GCU's Celina Buhr in the red bracket, but was unable to walk away with a win, dropping a 6-4, 6-4 match.
In the black singles bracket, freshman Aesha Patel struggled to overcome CSUN's Emma Roenholt and was ultimately defeated 6-0, 6-3, while Anderson faced a similar fate against Alex Kuo (AFA), falling 7-6 (6), 6-1 in her matchup.
Competition continues with day two on Saturday, Sept. 29. Doubles action is set to begin once again at 9 a.m. with singles play immediately following.
Admission to Fall Classic I is free and fans are encouraged to park in P7 on the corner of 55th Street and Montezuma Road. The Aztec Tennis Center is located just beyond Tony Gwynn Stadium, SDSU Softball Stadium and the Aztec Aquaplex on the northwest edge of campus.
