SAN FRANCISCO – In his season-opening tournament, San Diego State men's tennis player Ignacio Martinez wrapped up the Battle in Bay Classic in style Sunday, winning two matches in the extra consolation singles bracket at California Tennis Club.
Among the highlights for Martinez was a triumph over TCU sophomore Bertus Kruger, who rose as high as No. 81 in the ITF World Junior tennis rankings and competed for the South African Junior Davis Cup team.
After capturing the first set 7-5, Martinez fell short in the second by a 6-3 count before prevailing in a hotly contested super-tiebreaker 1-0(10).
The Aztec sophomore also took care of business in his second encounter of the afternoon with a conquest of San Francisco freshman standout David Woodland in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
San Diego State returns to the courts next weekend when select Aztecs compete in the pre-qualifying rounds of the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The event runs from Sept. 29 through Oct. 8.
SDSU will also conduct its lone home tournament of the fall slate with the Aztec Invitational, set for Oct. 5-7.
