SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team concluded its season-opening weekend on Sunday with four players competing in two events at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., and the Battle in the Bay in San Francisco, Calif.
At the Wildcat Invite, Nicholas Mitchell captured the championship final of the U.S. Open flight at Ventana Canyon Golf and Racquet Club, where the singles brackets were named for Grand Slam professional tennis events. The SDSU junior took home the crown after defeating Lucas Severo of Mesa Community College in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
Rounding out the Tucson meet was fellow classmate Rafael Gonzalez Almazan, who prevailed over Northern Arizona's Chris Steele in an extra consolation match via super-tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Meanwhile at the Battle in the Bay, sophomore Ignacio Martinez was a double winner in extra consolation singles matches at California Tennis Club on Sunday, emerging triumphant in a super-tiebreaker of his own over TCU's Bertus Kruger 7-5, 3-6, 1-0(10), before knocking of David Woodland of host San Francisco in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. However, senior Sander Gjoels-Andersen was not as fortunate in his encounter against Ross Watson of Pacific, suffering a 7-6(4), 6-3 setback.
Gjoels-Andersen and Martinez also fell short in their extra consolation doubles match, dropping an 8-6 decision to Andre Ilagen and Blaz Seric of Hawai'i.
Select San Diego State players will return to action for the ITA All-American Championships, starting next weekend in Tulsa, Okla. The tournament runs from Sept. 29-Oct. 8.
