Swimming Starts Season With Dominating Win Over USD

SAN DIEGO -- McKenna Meyer claimed the top finish in San Diego State swimming and diving's season-opening pentathlon meet against San Diego, leading SDSU to a 33-24 win over the Toreros. SDSU took each of the top seven individual spots and 13 of the top 15 overall.
 
Meyer's time of 4:54.93 was good for first place by a near four-second margin, with teammate Courtney Vincent (4:58.86) finishing in second. Several freshmen impressed in their collegiate debuts, including Kristina Murphy (third place, 4:59.16), and Maude Boily-Dufour (seventh place, 5:09.81). Also included in the top seven were Klara Thormalm (5:01.25), Elli Ferrin (5:05.06) and Larisa Tam (5:08.93), who finished fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
 
Alma Thormalm had SDSU start off on a strong note, posting a first-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 51.97. Vincent followed Thormalm with a first-place effort of her own in the 100 fly, touching the wall at 55.92.
 
The Aztecs claimed each of the top nine spots in the 100 back, led by Ferrin who clocked in at 56.59. The Aztecs made the afternoon a first-place sweep after Klara Thormalm (1:04.47) and Vincent (58.34) won the 100 breast and 100 IM, respectively.
 
After the pentathlon, the meet featured five 50-yard sprint races, which featured another Vincent win (50 fly – 25.37), another first-place finish by Ferrin (50 back - 26.56), and a second victory by Klara Thormalm (50 breast – 30.37). Meyer capped her successful day with a win in the 400 IM, clocking in at 4:31.42, while freshman Mia Ryan won the 500 free in her collegiate debut with a time of 5:20.32.
 
NOTES
-             San Diego State won its season-opening pentathlon meet against USD for the eighth consecutive season.
-             Mike Shrader improved to 137-15 in dual meet competition over his Aztec career. He is a perfect 22-0 against San Diego during his time as SDSU's head coach.
