San Diego State vs. San Diego (Pentathlon Meet)
Friday, Sept. 14 | 2:00 p.m. PT | Aztec Aquaplex | San Diego, Calif.
The San Diego State swimming and diving team begins its 2018-19 season on Friday, hosting San Diego at the Aztec Aquaplex for the team's annual pentathlon meet. San Diego State returns 19 student-athletes from its 2017-18 roster, while welcoming 13 freshmen to the squad.
SDSU is fresh off a season where it recorded its ninth consecutive top-three finish at the Mountain West Championships and sent then-sophomore Courtney Vincent to the NCAA Championships. San Diego State also returns 2018 Mountain West Championships Freshman of the Meet Klara Thormalm and 10-time all-Mountain West honoree McKenna Meyer. The Aztecs recorded an 11-1 record in dual meet competition last season.
Mike Shrader enters his 12th season as head coach at San Diego State and owns a 136-15 record in dual meet competition over that span. Shrader has had 129 all-conference selections and sent 37 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships over his Aztec tenure.
This will mark the eighth consecutive season SDSU has opened its season with a pentathlon meet against San Diego, and the Aztecs have won all seven of the prior season-opening meetings. Last season, McKenna Meyer (100 IM), Alma Thormalm (100 free), Elliyana Ferrin (100 back), Caitlin Delaney (100 breast) all logged first place finishes in last season's meeting, with Meyer and Thormalm finishing second and third overall, respectively, with times of 5:02.97 and 5:04.96.
Following this Friday's meet, SDSU hosts a double dual meet against Washington State and Nevada on Friday, Sept. 21 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
