BERKELEY, Calif. – San Diego State fell behind early and could not recover in what ended as a 3-1 road loss at California on Friday afternoon inside Edwards Stadium. The Aztecs drop to 1-3 on the year, while the Golden Bears improve to 3-1.
SDSU for the second time in three outings allowed a goal in the opening five minutes. Cal's Daisy Cleverley played the ball to Anja Koehler, who flicked a pass which ended in an Abigail Kim header. The fourth-minute goal was Kim's second of the season.
Kim continued to be a thorn in San Diego State's side when 14 minutes later, she found Luca Deza, who scored from close range. California carried the two-goal lead into halftime after outshooting the Aztecs, 7-2, in the first 45 minutes.
San Diego State sliced its deficit in half when Florence Laroche found the back of the net in the 67th minute. Chloe Frisch played a ball back into the box only to have the true freshman place her shot just inside the far post.
The Aztecs for the third straight game had a chunk of time to find the equalizer, but unlike the previous two games, their foe stretched the lead to keep the contest out of reach. This time, Kayla Fong scored on a header in the 77th minute with the assist going to Emma Westin. The 3-1 score stood for the balance of the game, sending SDSU to its third loss in a row.
BIG NOTE
The last four goals San Diego State has scored have been recorded by true freshmen. Then-freshman Mia Root scored in the first round of the 2017 NCAA tournament, Taylor Moorehead tickled the twine vs. New Mexico State, Lauren Dicus headed her shot past the Texas Tech goalkeeper, and Laroche scored against the Golden Bears.

San Diego State will remain in Northern California for the rest of the weekend. The Aztecs will play at UC Davis on Sunday with first tap set for 2 p.m. PT.
