SAN DIEGO – San Diego State finished the 2017-18 campaign ranked first in average home attendance among all California Division I universities. It marked the eighth consecutive year in which the program accomplished the feat.
The Aztecs averaged 11,344 fans across 15 games to rank 32nd nationally, which was 18 spots ahead of the next-closest California school, UCLA (50th; 8,620). California (66th; 7,376), Fresno State (92nd; 6,033) and Stanford (117th; 4,169) rounded out the California top five.
At the Mountain West level, SDSU ranked first among the 11 conference institutions for the second straight year. The Aztecs finished one spot nationally ahead of New Mexico, which averaged 10,883 fans for its 17-game home slate. UNLV (41st; 10,093), Nevada (47th; 9,048) and Utah State (72nd; 6,944) came in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the league.
SDSU home games, additionally, were filled at 91.38 percent capacity, ranking first among California Division I schools and 28th nationally.
This season, San Diego State is set to return three of their top four scorers from last season (Devin Watson, Matt Mitchell, Jalen McDaniels) and four of their top six (Watson, Mitchell, McDaniels, Jeremy Hemsley) off a 2017-18 team that went 22-11, won their Mountain West-high 11th conference title and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
