SAN DIEGO - San Diego State rising sophomore Anastasia Vontzou competed at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Poznan, Poland, from July 24-29 where she and partner Thomais Emmanouilidou represented Greece with a fourth place finish in the lightweight women's double sculls grand final.
The pair made their way into the grand final by meeting a series of qualifications throughout the weekend. Vontzou (bow) and Emmanouilidou (stroke) finished second in their heat on Thursday, July 26, with a time of 7:27.670, earning a direct path to Saturday's semifinal event. The duo then came in third place (7:31.230) in the semifinal to qualify for the grand final on Sunday, where they finished fourth with a time of 7:00.450.
Including last weekend's competition at the U23 Worlds, the Volos, Greece native has competed for the Greek team a total of five times, first in the quadruple sculls at the 2015 U23 World Championships, as well as the lightweight doubles at the 2016 FISA European and Final Olympic Qualification Regatta, missing a chance to race at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic games by four positions. Vontzou also competed in the junior women's double sculls at both the 2016 European Rowing Junior Championships and the 2016 World Rowing Junior Championships.
