'The Drive 2003' Reaches $309,531 After First Report Night April 25, 2003 Volunteers from around San Diego gathered at the Aztec Athletic Center onThursday for Report Night No. 1 of "The Drive 2003". At the first checkpoint of the 10-week campaign, volunteers have securedpledges totalling $309,531 toward their goal of $1.25 million forstudent-athlete scholarships at San Diego State University. Teams from around San Diego County are in competition for this year's drive, building on last year's record and all-time high of $1.1 million.The volunteers were treated to a presentation by head softball coach KathyVan Wyk, as her team leads the Mountain West Conference at 9-0 and are riding a school-record 13-game winning streak going into this weekend's double-header at UNLV. In the team competition, Morrison's Monty Clubbers from Scripps Ranch/Poway, led by Captain Bert Morrison, came out of the gate in high gear looking for their third consecutive team title with $49,660. The Tierrasanta Titans, led by Martin Imhof, are second at $26,360, while The Beach Bum Border Patrol, led by the quad-captaincy of Jim & Deborah Marshall, Dave Youmans, and Martha Beckman are in third at $23,697. In the individual race, Ben Bagnas from Morrison's Monty Clubbers has laidthe gauntlet down in search of his own personal "three-peat" with a whopping$44,135 at the first checkpoint. Craig Nelson, current AAF President and amember of The Better Half is in second at $11,525, Bob McCray of Monty'sJewels out of La Mesa is in third at $9,933, veteran Cliff Bee from theBeach Bum Border Patrol stands fourth at $9,150, and Bobbie Harkey of theTierrasanta Titans rounds out the top five at $9,100.
