At the second checkpoint of the 10-week campaign, volunteers have secured pledges totaling $553,901 toward their goal of $1.25 million for student-athlete scholarships at San Diego State University.

Teams from around San Diego and Orange Counties are in competition for this year's drive, building on last year's record and all-time high of $1.1 million. The volunteers were treated to a presentation by Head Men's Tennis Coach John Nelson, fresh off his third consecutive regular and post-season MWC Championships, as he leads his squad into first and second round NCAA Tournament action (this Saturday and Sunday at the SDSU Tennis Courts) for the fifth time in the past six years.

In the team competition, Morrison's Monty Clubbers from Scripps Ranch/Poway, led by Captain Bert Morrison, continue their quest for their third consecutive team title with $84,275, 75.7 percent of the 2002 total. Monty's Family Jewels out of La Mesa, led by Bob McCray, are second at $63,065, or 54.6 percent of 2002, while The Better Half out of North County, led by Larry Cook, are in third at $28,682, or 51.1 percent of 2002.

The Team Champions are decided by the greatest overall percentage increase over their 2002 final tally.
