SAN DIEGO - San Diego State Director of Athletics Rick Bay today announced the names of 135 Aztec student-athletes honored last night at the Sixth Annual SDSU Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet at the University Club in downtown San Diego. The event, sponsored by the Aztec Athletic Foundation, the SDSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, recognizes those San Diego State varsity athletes who earned a 3.20 grade point average or better during the 1999 calendar year. Following the banquet, the group attended a performance of the hit Broadway musical "Rent" at the Civic Theater.
Those individuals who attained a 3.50 gpa or higher received a Monty Award while those who attained a 3.20 to 3.49 earned a Big Red Award. The 135 student-athletes recognized this year represents the most Aztecs to be honored in the banquet's seven years. The figure represents 30% of the students on varsity athletic rosters in 1999. The number of this year's honorees more than triples the 43 student-athletes awarded at the first scholar-athlete banquet in 1994.
Eight student-athletes achieved a 4.0 gpa in at least one semester, thus earning the Jim Malik Award for attaining the highest gpa's in the spring and/or fall semesters. Those athletes are Damian DeBeaubien (football), Meredith Johnson (women's crew), Katja Karrento (women's tennis), Mike Koch (men's volleyball), Kelly Kyes (women's soccer), Catherine McGuire (women's soccer), Tamara Simpson (softball) and Jennifer Van Gilder (women's golf).
The award is in honor of former SDSU NCAA Faculty-Athletics Representative Jim Malik who is now retired.
