A key fixture at San Diego State for over 20 years, Steve Schnall was promoted to executive associate athletic director of external relations in the summer of 2015. In his role, Schnall oversees the Aztecs' marketing, media relations and ticketing efforts and works as the sport supervisor for women's basketball, men's and women's tennis, along with men's and women's golf. In addition, he acts as the liaison with the department's multimedia rights holder Fox Sports College Properties. With an extensive background in sales, marketing and broadcasting, Schnall has been a prominent leader in the increased visibility of San Diego State athletics over the past two decades. Prior to his current position, Schnall was the department's associate athletic director of operations after beginning his tenure on Montezuma Mesa as associate athletic director of marketing and promotions. In 2004, Schnall served as the tournament director for the Aztec Invitational held in conjunction with the opening of Petco Park in downtown San Diego. SDSU set an all-time NCAA collegiate baseball attendance record of 40,106 in the first-ever game at the new facility. In 2000, Schnall was named Community Leader of the Year by the San Diego Union-Tribune. Prior to his tenure at San Diego State, Schnall worked for six years as the director of sales and marketing at Cornell University. During his stint with the Ivy League school, he oversaw the launch of Cornell Sports Network and served as play-by-play announcer for a number of Big Red sports. In addition, Schnall helped dramatically increase Cornell's corporate sponsorships from just five to 80 clients. From 1983-89, Schnall was a television sports anchor and reporter at WSTM-TV, the NBC affiliate based in Syracuse, N.Y., following a three-year run at KFFB-TV in Great Falls, Mont., where he was the sports director and anchor for all weekday newscasts. Schnall received his bachelor of arts degree from Syracuse University in 1979. He began his professional career as radio account executive and sports anchor at WTKO-AM in Ithaca, N.Y. Schnall is married to Andrea Lambert and has two children, Sarah and David. |
